Movistar’s Nairo Quintana started stage 8 of the 2013 Tour de France 25 seconds behind the race leader. And, on the slopes of the Col de Pailhères, the 23-year-old Colombian climbing specialist attacked. He’s a dangerous rider and fancied causing some upsets after winning a tough stage in last year’s Critérium du Dauphiné and taking the Route du Sud.

With about 36km to go, Quiantana attacked from the elite group of favorites, quickly plowing through a few riders to ride at the head of the race. Climbing up the Ax 3 Domaines, he battled to hold off the world's best climbers but was caught at about 5km to go by stage winner Chris Froome and Richie Porte, both of Team Sky. Quintana crossed the line with Alberto Contador and Roman Kreuziger (Saxo-Tinkoff Bank), 1:48 down on yellow jersey holder Froome.

BikeRadar checked out the Tour debutant’s bike on the eve of the first mountain stage in Albi. While the setup was stock Movistar kit, he was running on new Campagnolo Bora Ultra 35 wheels, launched earlier this year.

The versatile but light wheelset and small 44cm frame mean the bike – without the SRM PowerControl 7 computer – tipped our scales at 6.89kg (15.19lb). That’s less than 10g over the UCI’s minimum weight requirement.
