GoPro’s helmet camera range has a couple of new additions for 2012. First up is a bolt-on rear LCD screen/viewfinder, which addresses one of the key criticisms of the otherwise excellent HD Helmet HERO. The second new product is slightly more off-the-wall: a twin-camera casing that allows you to film 3D footage.
Let’s start with the 3D Hero System. If you already own a GoPro, you’re going to have to double up to get the benefits of the extra dimension. For £99.99, you get a waterproof housing case for the two cameras, 3D glasses, a helmet mount and all the software and cabling required to get going.
The pack comes with everything you need to go 3D, apart from the additional camera
The system allows you to record simultaneously in 2D and 3D video, and retains the ability to take photos too. It should be noted that 3D is only compatible with 1,080p full-HD GoPros, and not the HD Hero 960 or standard-definition cameras. With the 1,080p helmet cam retailing for £299.99, going 3D will set you back around £700.
The LCD BacPac removable screen also only works with 1,080p cameras, attaching to the rear using the existing port. The benefits are obvious; you can see what you're shooting and don't have to get your laptop out to view what you've shot.
There's an integrated speaker so you can check the audio, and the viewfinder makes it much easier to take still images. The £89.99 pack includes a waterproof housing for your camera; however, the included housing for the screen isn't waterproof.
