A new £20 million state-of-the-art velodrome could be built in Derby, England if plans submitted by the city council get the go-ahead.
The arena, which would also house sports courts and host concerts, would feature an Olympic standard 250m cycling track and could open by the summer of 2014. The proposals also include a 1.5km closed-circuit cycle track around the outside of the building. It would be built on land next to Derby County’s Pride Park football stadium and replace some of the older sports centres in the city.
A decision by Derby City Council’s planning committee is due in March, with building work provisionally starting in June. Construction firm Mace, who've had a hand in the development of the velodrome for this summer’s London Olympic Games and one in Apeldoom, The Netherlands, have been chosen to oversee the project.
Claire Davenport, director of leisure and culture at the council, said: “The multi-sport arena will provide the city with fantastic modern facilities to be proud of and will form part of our lasting Olympic legacy for the people of Derby. Our commitment to transforming Derby’s leisure facilities will play a key role in the future economic growth of the city, not to mention benefiting generations to come.”
