The Great Manchester Cycle, which was officially launched today, will give people in the north west UK the opportunity to ride a cycling event on closed roads.
The ride is happening on 4 June (Bank Holiday Monday) and is being organised by Nova, who are also responsible for the Bupa Great North Run, the world's biggest half marathon.
The 13 mile lap starts at Eastlands, goes past Old Trafford and takes riders onto the Mancunian Way, the inner city ring road that's normally closed to cyclists. With three distances offered, 13miles (1 lap), 26miles (2 laps) and 52miles (4 laps), the Great Manchester Cycle should appeal to newcomers, families and club cyclists out for a gentle ride.

Rebecca Romero, Olympic and world champion in the women's 3000m individual pursuit in 2008, was at the launch and will be riding the event in June. "I will definitely be there and I’m looking forward to being there at the start of another great sporting initiative for Manchester," she said. "Of course I have happy memories of becoming world champion here back in 2008."
Manchester councillor Mike Amesbury said it was "unique chance for everyone, regardless of ability, to get on their bikes and enjoy riding through the city on roads free of traffic.
"The 2012 Olympics will see a national focus on sport that will help inspire everyone to get more active. Manchester is hosting a selection of mass participation events throughout the year providing as many people as possible with the chance to take part."
Entries for the Great Manchester Cycle are now open at www.greatcycle.org and will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
