The Boardman Bikes 2011 launch continued with the Performance Series (see our story on the Elite Series here), consisting of models across the road, mountain bike, hybrid and cyclo-cross ranges.
The bikes that stood out to us were the full suspension FS Team for £999.99. Our mountain bike technical director Steve Worland was impressed by the weight (29.5lb) and spec for the price - SRAM X7, RockShox Monarch rear shock and Sector TK front shock, Avid Elixir 3 brakes - and it will be tested in an upcoming issue of What Mountain Bike.
Commuters have several options to choose from too, depending on their preferred type of bike. The MTB/HT Team R (SRAM X7 gear, £849.99) and it's cheaper sibling the Comp R are fully rigid mountain bikes that come with slick tyres and disc brakes. That makes them ideal for commuting and - with a tyre swap - weekend off-road riding.
The hybrid range has been significantly upgraded, with new tube profiles - triangular downtube, ovalised BB30 bottom bracket for more stiffness, wishbone seatstay for a bit of extra comfort, box section chainstays for greater stiffness and a tapered steerer tube for more confidence up front. Disc brakes are standard throughout the range and there are rack and mudguard mounts as well.
The highlight of the road range is the aero Road Pro Carbon (recently previewed by BikeRadar, £1,799.99) which borrows its frame shape from the Elite AiR but at a significantly cheaper price. Next on the list is the the Road Team Carbon (Shimano 105, £1,299.99) - the same frame that Nicole Cooke raced on in 2008. Hitting the sub-£1000 category is the aluminium framed Road Team (Shimano 105, £999.99); Road Comp (SRAM Apex, £799.99) and the entry level Road Race (Shimano Sora, £649.99), which despite its name is more of a sportive rider's set up with a longer head tube than the other bikes in the series.
The MTB hardtail range includes the HT Pro Carbon (SRAM X9, RockShox SID RLT fork, £1,599.99), HT Pro (SRAM X9, RockShox Reba RL fork, £999.99), HT Team (SRAM X7, Rock Shox Recon TK fork, £849.99), HT Comp (SRAM X5, £649.99), fully rigid HT Team R (SRAM X7 £849.99) and HT Comp R (TBC). Unlike the road series which goes up to XL, the mountain bikes are only available in three sizes: S, M and L.
The full suspension range includes the FS Pro (SRAM X9, Rockshox Revelation RLT front and Monarch RL rear shocks, £1,599.99) and the already mentioned FS Team (£999.99).
Unlike the Elite series, the performance series will be available exclusively through Halfords throughout the UK and Ireland online from today (4 March) and in stores from 2 April. As with the Elite series, international distribution is yet to be finalised, but details will be announced in the coming weeks.
