This is the soon-to-be-available, revamped Orange Alpine 160 - what the company call their 'big mountain' bike, and due to go on sale 17 June with a range of spec options and a base price of £3,599.99.
This frame is a claimed 300g lighter than its predecessor and features Orange's shock slider adjustable suspension hardware, so the bike's geometry can be adjusted. Refusing to jump on the 650b/29er bandwagon with this model, the designers have decided to stick with 26in wheels.
The frame is made of 6061-T6 aluminium, and made in Halifax, UK. Suspension is handled by a 160mm Fox Float 34 fork with a 15mm quick-release axle. The rear shock is also a Fox Float unit, with both front and rear suspension featuring Fox' Kashima coating.
On this test build, 10-speed gearing is taken care of by a RaceFace Respond crankset with a single 32T ring, matched to a Shimano Zee Shadow rear mech controlled by a Shimano SLX shifter. There's a 10-speed Shimano 11-36T cassette, with an MRP G3 Mini chain device keeping things tight.
This Alpine comes with Shimano SLX 180mm brakes as standard but there is the option to upgrade to Hope stoppers. It rolls on Hope Pro 2 hubs with Mavic EN 321 rims, with Maxxis Minion and High Roller tyres.
The RaceFace bar, Shimano SLX shifter and Reverb remote make a good match
Up close, there are a lot of RaceFace logos to be seen on the Alpine 160 - Chester parts take care of the cockpit and the bottom bracket is an X-type. It's worth noting that some of the upgrade options include switching the bar and stem for Renthal finishing kit.
Also up front, you get a choice of Cane Creek headsets. A nice touch is the RockShox Reverb dropper seatpost, which comes as standard. This 160 is quite clearly black, but it's available in a range of colours, including a selection of neon hues if that's your thing.
