Avid revamps the BB7 disc brake

Avid has given the venerable BB7 disc brake a bit of a facelift, adding lighter stainless steel hardware and giving the brake a shiny black anodized finish.

The updated BB7S uses the same stainless hardware introduced for the BB7 Road SL last fall. The BB7s also comes with Avid’s HS1 rotor.

The construction and mechanics of this cable-actuated disc brake remain unchanged. The BB7S still has a two-piece, forged aluminum caliper and uses a single spring-loaded arm to moves the outboard pad while the inboard pad remains stationary. The Tri-Align Caliper Positioning System and the inboard and outboard pad contact adjusters are also included in the blacked-out brake.

Claimed weight for a BB7S caliper is 197 grams, which is a scant 7g lighter than the previous version and 17g heavier than the BB7 Road SL. The BB7 Road SL saves more weight thanks in part to the use of aluminum-backed pads, while BB7S uses steel-backed pads with an organic brake compound.

The new BB7s is available now and has an MSRP of US$120/€108, which is approximately US$41/€31 more expensive than the BB7 without stainless hardware.
