Garmin keeps adding integrated features to its line of Edge GPS units, with gear and battery information from SRAM Red eTap and Campagnolo EPS electronic drivetrains being the latest additions. The Garmin Edge 520 already had this feature for Shimano Di2; now it and the Edge 1000 match the Wahoo Elemnt GPS computer in having eTap functionality plus playing nice with the Italian EPS.
With a free firmware update, the Garmin Edge 520 and 1000 lets riders with eTap or EPS see their gear information in numeric and/or graphic form, plus gear ratio data and battery life information.
Relatedly, the Garmin Edge 1000 now gets the FTP and watts per kilogram tracking, VO2 max and recovery advisor metrics that first debuted on the Edge 520. While watts per kilogram is a concrete metric, the others are educated calculations, not scientific measurements.
Other updates include the 520 and 1000 being compatible with TrainingPeaks' new WKO4 individualized power levels, and the Edge 510 and 810 (following the 520 and 1000) supporting Garmin's Varia smart bike lights that adjust to the time of day and rider speed.
