Specialized's developers certainly did their homework when creating the new 2FO clipless shoes, which are packed full of highly effective trail features.
The outsole is made up of two different density rubbers. The red, softer section of the sole is made from the same ‘SlipNot’ rubber used on the flat pedal version of the 2FO for better off-the-bike traction, while the black section – dubbed the ‘Landing Strip’ – is slightly firmer to make it easier to slip your foot back into the pedal when clipping back in.
In practice, it works. Getting back into the pedal after a quick dab involves next to no scrabbling around or struggling to re-engage the cleat. It helps that Specialized has shifted the cleat slots further back towards the mid-foot than usual and extended them by 4mm. This makes the 2FOs good for downhill riding because it produces a more balanced stance once clipped in.
Other highlights include the tough, injection moulded toe bumper and the small elasticated LaceLock that stops your laces flapping about. Comfort is up there with the best of them, thanks in part to the Body Geometry footbed, and they’re easily stiff enough for long trail miles without being uncomfortable.
While the air mesh material used in the upper helps keep things cool on hot days, it definitely doesn’t help with keeping the cold and wet out come winter. On the plus side, they don’t soak up liquid and dry quickly. At 1,040g (pair, size 42 with cleats) they’re not exactly hefty either.
